The future of Royston Rugby Club looks very bright based on the u7s’ first tournament of the season,
and indeed of their young lives!
Our bright-eyed youngsters travelled to Haverhill, where they played tag matches against Shelford,
Peterborough, and hosts Haverhill themselves. Whilst we don’t keep score at this level, Royston
made an excellent account of themselves, and this reporter certainly would have awarded them the
top prize.
Coach Craig’s pre-season training has clearly sunk in as there was some wonderful free-flowing
attacking rugby, solid defensive lines, and some silky passing from all the Royston players.
The standard improved as the games went on, and by the final match of the morning the proud
parents and grandparents on the sidelines were treated to some excellent rugby. Both Harriet and
Henry showed excellent handling skills and positional awareness right from the off, and Rowan’s
confidence grew as the tournament went on, bagging an impressive hat-trick of tries in the final game.
Charlie and Ruby both showed promise with ball in hand, troubling the opposition defence every time
they had possession, and I suspect Warren Gatland will soon hear of Aled’s talents and will be
sending scouts to the heath in no time.
Jensen and Ruairidh thrilled the crowds with their blistering pace, each lad scoring more tries than I
could count, and Ruben was solid as a rock in defence, taking took obvious delight in ripping the tags
off anyone that came near him.
Kudos to coach Craig who brought his usual infectious energy on the day, inspiring all our young stars
to go forward with confidence, and most importantly, with huge smiles on their faces.
